Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) individuals describe those who come from a different cultural background, where they were born overseas, or their parents were born overseas, who may speak a language other than English or identify strongly with a particular culture or religion.
Quite a significant number of individuals from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds who experience mental health issues are often reluctant or unable to seek help. This is often due to a lack of professionals/mental health services that are culturally appropriate or informed, or they are just not available in their language. Other issues that may hinder these individuals from seeking help are; stigma about mental health in their culture, different cultural conceptions of mental health, different understanding and presentations of mental health symptoms in different cultures, or lack of awareness about Western health systems.
